The Tijuana River Reserve has exciting, hands-on education programs for students as well as tours, informative lectures and other outreach opportunities for adult audiences. Education programs at the reserve are bilingual and include K-12 programs, interpretive walks, beach clean-ups, and teacher training courses for primary and secondary grades. In addition to our ongoing programs, the Tijuana Estuary also puts on special events throughout the year, such as Fiesta del Rio and Earth Day.

School visits to Tijuana River Reserve are open to elementary, middle and high school groups, and other youth groups. Visits are theme-based and integrated with the California State Science Framework. Activities usually focus on general estuary ecology, plants and birds. Specific school programs include:

  • M.A.R.S.H. (Marsh Awareness with Resources for Slough Habitats)
  • Tijuana Estuary Explorers
  • Tijuana Estuary High School Teacher's Guide

Once a month, reserve offers a lecture series give by enthusiastic biologists, specialists or researchers who share information on estuary-related topics or other topics of interest. A lively question and answer session follows the presentation.

The Tijuana River Reserve offers the Jr. Rangers program for students 7-12 years of age which covers topics such as ecology of estuaries and the importance of wetlands. Hands-on activities are included and kids can earn patches, buttons and more as they progress through the program.
