"I am very proud to join in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. In every area of our national life – in science, in sports, in politics, and of course in entertainment, the Hispanic community has had a positive impact, and one from which all of us benefit.

"From those who fought in the Revolutionary War to the front lines in Afghanistan today, I join in saluting the countless Latino men and women who have put their lives on the line – and who have given all – to keep our country safe and free.

"As we work together to move our economic recovery forward and lay the groundwork for a strong future, I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress, including those in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, to create opportunities for all Americans to find good jobs, send their kids to college, afford quality health care, and save for retirement.

"In each generation we must prepare for the success of the next generation. As San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro said in his marvelous Keynote Address to the Democratic Party earlier this month: 'The American Dream is not a sprint, or even a marathon, but a relay.'

"Standing together, passing the baton from one to the other, and working hand in hand to achieve a full future of opportunities – we can give life to those inspiring words that have carried so many so far: Sí se puede - Yes we can.”
