I2CNER

Sandia is a Collaborating Institution of the  ”International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research (I²CNER)” of Kyushu University.  This institute is a “World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI)” established by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).   These institutes are structured to support projects aimed at creating preeminent research centers staffed at their core with the world’s most leading researchers.

The objective of I²CNER is to develop the science required for the removal of the barriers to a hydrogen-based economy and enable the technological breakthroughs required for efficient CO₂ capture and sequestration (CCS) in both the ocean and the earth or its conversion to a useful product. I²CNER is lead by Dr. Petros Sofronos of the University of Illinois.

Sandia’s role is Lead of the Hydrogen Structural Materials program area which seeks to understand the mechanisms of hydrogen assisted fatigue and fracture, and develop models for hydrogen effects in materials.
