Organization Information

The New England River Basins Commission was established September 6, 1967, by Executive Order 11371, under the authority of Public Law 89-90, the Water Resources Act. The Commission served as an interagency advisory commission of the Water Resources Council. The Commission studied the needs for water and related land resources in New England and recommended plans and programs for meeting those needs.

Scope and Content Note

The records consist of memorandums, correspondence, reports, and maps. Primary correspondents include the President, William J. Hopkins, Kenneth Cole, William E. Timmons, and Peter M. Flanigan. Topics include expansion of the geographical jurisdiction of the New England river basins, and the Great Lakes basin, the Upper Mississippi River basin, the Pacific Northwest river basins, the Ohio River basin, and the Missouri River basin.

The terms Executive and General are used before the code FG 281 generally to determine the source of the materials. Items designated Executive are communications among national, foreign, state and local governments and their agencies, Members of Congress, and other prominent people. Items designated General are communications between Government officials and private citizens, institutions, and other private interests.
