Swimming is the second most popular sport activity in the U.S. Disease outbreak reports associated with pools, hot tubs, and other recreational water venues have increased in recent years. In 2007, 2.4 million cases of acute otitis externa (AOE), or swimmer’s ear, were diagnosed in the U.S. During this COCA call, CDC subject matter experts will review updated recommendations for interventions to reduce the risk of AOE and other recreational water illnesses.

Investigators from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, have found the genes that malaria parasites use to create feeding pores.

Outbreak Updates for International Cruise Ships – June 2 (CDC)
Cruise ships participating in the Vessel Sanitation Program are required to report the total number of gastrointestinal (GI) illness cases (including zero cases) evaluated by the medical staff before the ship arrives at a U.S. port, when sailing from a foreign port.
Current Travel Warnings – June 1 (US Department of State)
Burundi was added this month to the list of Travel Warnings in effect; which include 33 destinations. Warnings are issued when long-term, protracted conditions that make a country dangerous or unstable lead the State Department to recommend that Americans avoid or consider the risk of travel to that country, or when the U.S. Government's ability to assist American citizens is constrained due to the closure of an embassy or consulate or because of a drawdown of its staff.

FDA Safety Communication: Thermographic Imaging Systems – June 2 (FDA)
The FDA is not aware of any valid scientific data to show that thermographic devices, when used on their own, are an effective screening tool for any medical condition including the early detection of breast cancer or other breast disease. FDA advises that thermography should not be used alone to diagnose breast cancer.
Aidapak Services Recalls all Repackaged Pharmaceuticals Due to Potential Cross Contamination with Beta Lactam Products – June 1 (FDA)
There is potential likelihood that a serious anaphylactic reaction in patients with known hypersensitivity to beta-lactam or penicillin products could result from receiving these products.
