Title: Place-Based Policies and Public Health: The Road to Healthy Rural People and Places (March 2011)
Abstract: This policy paper discusses the importance of creating effective place-based policies to influence rural and metropolitan development. It describes challenges and opportunities for place-based policies, discusses the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010 to develop such policies, provides an historical overview of integrated approaches to community and individual health, examines community health measures from the United States Department of Health and Human Services and ACA, and discusses pertinent sections of the ACA and Title V that support place-based programs. The paper includes a strategy map from the Institute of Medicine Roundtable on Value & Science-Driven Health Care and references.
