Wells Takes OLCF Message to Industry

An important part of the OLCF’s mission is ensuring that American industry is aware and takes advantage of the vast computational resources available at the center.

To that end, OLCF Director of Science Jack Wells recently spoke at the United Technologies Engineering Fellows Lecture series at Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, Connecticut on July 26. Pratt & Whitney is a subsidiary of United Technologies.
Wells’ talk, titled Transforming Science and Engineering with Leadership Computing, discussed a range of ambitious computational research projects underway at the OLCF and provided an overview of OLCF’s unique computational resources, both in terms of hardware and expertise, available to industrial and academic partners, all with an emphasis on how modeling and simulation are helping to transform research and development.
Attendees included engineers, chief scientists, and management from Pratt & Whitney, United Technologies Research Center (UTRC), and other United Technologies subsidiaries Sikorsky, Hamilton Sundstrand, and Carrier.
“The OLCF is a unique resource, and our goal is to increase the impact of our center. We are targeting industry for outreach activities because we believe industry has a latent potential for large impact via leadership computing,” Wells said.
Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, industrial gas turbines and space propulsion systems and is using OLCF resources in a project in partnership with UTRC.
