CAB unit hosts Wamego School for on-post tour

Story by: Sgt. Roland A Hale
CAB Public Affairs

A group of fifth-graders from Wamego's West Elementary School visited Fort Riley May 20, 2011 for a field trip led by aviators from an AH-64 Apache Longbow helicopter battalion.

The trip was organized as part of a partnership between the school and the 1st Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Aviation Regiment, Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division. The battalion is part of the CAB, which in turn has a partnership with Pottawatomie County.

Soldiers from the battalion have made several visits to West Elementary School in the past months. This is the first visit the school has made to Fort Riley.

"We like to visit," said teacher Teri Dow. "The kids have been asking since school started, 'Do we get to go to Fort Riley this year?' It's important to our Families. A lot of them are military or know someone who is."

Dow and her students, along with several other fifth grade classes, visited historic sites at Fort Riley. The students also visited the Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard stables and the battalion's hangar, where the Apache helicopter was a big hit, Dow said.

"We're exposing the kids to some of the Fort Riley experiences that you can't get by just driving through post," said Capt. Ketty Ibanez, an Apache pilot who helped with the visit. "The museums, the aircraft, the color guard's horses – we're showing them what the community here is about. The kids were entertained the whole time. They've had lots of questions and really enjoyed seeing everything."

The battalion will continue its partnership with West Elementary School through Fort Riley's Adopt-a-School program.
