USS Mount Hood (AE-29) (Non-retention)

The USS Mount Hood is a U.S. Navy Kilauea-class ammunition ship.  It was the second Navy ship named after Mount Hood, a volcano in Oregon’s Cascade Range.  The ship was laid down on May 8, 1967 by Bethlehem Steel Corp., Sparrows Point, Maryland.  It was launched on July 17, 1968, and commissioned on May 1, 1971. The ship was homeported in Concord, California.  Unlike its seven sister ships of the Kilauea class, the ship was never transferred to the U.S. Navy’s Military Sealift Command.  Mount Hood was decommissioned in August of 1999 and held in reserve at Bremerton, Washington before being moved in October of that year to the Maritime Administration’s Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet in Benicia, California.
