USPTO Announces Two Key Appointments

Agency’s Chief Financial and Administrative Officer and Civil Rights Director Named

The Department of Commerce's United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) announced today the appointments of two key players in the USPTO’s management team.

Jo-Anne Barnard will serve as the agency’s Chief Financial and Chief Administrative Officer. During the past seven years, Ms. Barnard has been director of USPTO’s Office of Space Acquisition. In that capacity, she has managed the selection and development of the agency’s new campus in Alexandria, Va., which the USPTO will begin to occupy later this year.

“Jo-Anne has done a tremendous job overseeing the complicated process of acquiring and building the Carlyle campus,” said Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property James E. Rogan. “I am confident that she will do an equally outstanding job as this agency’s top financial and administrative officer.”

Maria Campo, an attorney in the Office of General Counsel, will serve as director of the Office of Civil Rights. Ms. Campo has been at the USPTO for three years and has dealt extensively with labor, employment and civil rights issues. Prior to working with the federal government, Maria had several years of experience in the public, private and corporate sectors dealing primarily with employment and labor issues.

“I am very pleased that Maria has agreed to take on this assignment,” Under Secretary Rogan commented. “I believe that Maria, who brings a great deal of sensitivity, compassion and knowledge to the job, will fulfill my commitment to a strong and effective Office of Civil Rights.”
