Funding Opportunities

The NOAA Marine Debris Program supports several grant opportunities for marine debris activities.

1. Marine Debris Prevention, Education and Outreach Partnership Grant

The FY13 grant opportunity is now open. Deadline to apply is Feb. 28, 2013. For more information on this grant visit Grants.gov (FFO# NOAA-NOS-ORR-2013-2003595).

2. Marine Debris Research Grant

The FY13 grant opportunity is now open. Deadline to apply is Feb. 28, 2013. For more information on this grant visit Grants.gov (FFO# NOAA-NOS-ORR-2013-2003594).

3. Community-based Marine Debris Removal Grant

NOTE: The FY13 grant opportunity is now closed.

For more information on this grant visit the NOAA Restoration Center's Marine Debris webpage or the Grants.gov site (FFO# NOAA-NMFS-HCPO-2013-2003477).

In cooperation with the NOAA Restoration Center, the NOAA Marine Debris Program offers funding that supports locally driven, community-based marine debris prevention and removal projects. These projects benefit coastal habitat, waterways, and wildlife including migratory fish.

With this grant program, NOAA has funded 76 marine debris removal projects and removed more than 3,814 metric tons of marine debris from our oceans since 2006.

Projects awarded through this grant competition have strong on-the-ground habitat components involving the removal of marine debris and derelict fishing gear, as well as activities that provide social benefits for people and their communities in addition to long-term ecological habitat improvements for NOAA trust resources. Through this solicitation, NOAA identifies marine debris removal projects, strengthens the development and implementation of habitat restoration through community-based marine debris removal, and fosters awareness of the effects of marine debris to further the conservation of living marine resource habitats. Successful proposals through this solicitation will be funded through a cooperative agreement.

4. Fishing for Energy Small Grants Fund

With support from the NOAA Marine Debris Program and Covanta Energy Corporation, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation will provide funding to Fishing for Energy Partnership ports, their partners, or other commercial fishing ports to provide capacity and incentives to address old, abandoned or derelict fishing gear.
