Interdisciplinary team at PNNL awarded for excellence in hazardous materials management
A team of staff at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) received an award from the Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers (ACHMM). Their award for "Excellence in Hazardous Materials Management" honors the development and implementation of the ChemAgain program started in October of 2007.
ChemAgain diverts high-quality, high-demand chemicals from the PNNL waste stream and makes them available for redistribution to other PNNL, Department of Energy (DOE), or non-profit entities. Prior to October 2007, redistribution of chemicals was dependent on individual efforts of research and waste management staff. The ChemAgain chemical exchange puts surplus chemical products back to productive use by redistributing them to others who can use them onsite or offsite. The ChemAgain program eliminates purchase cost to the new owner and the cost of disposal for the current owner. PNNL is proud of ChemAgain's ability to reduce the amount of hazardous waste and thus reduce PNNL's environmental footprint.

PNNL among the STARs again
Employee and manager commitment and involvement are the key drivers for a successful safety culture. A key symbol of the strong safety culture at PNNL is our status as a DOE Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) STAR site.
The DOE-VPP has three levels of recognition: STAR, MERIT and DEMONSTRATION. Contractors whose programs meet the requirements for outstanding safety and health programs receive STAR recognition, the highest achievement level.
After an extensive review last fall, the STAR flag will continue to fly proudly at PNNL. Mike Schlender, Associate Laboratory Director for Operational Systems; Roby Enge, Environment, Health, Safety and Security Director; and Vern Madson, VPP co-chair, accepted the new VPP STAR site flag from DOE Pacific Northwest Site Office Director Mike Weiss at the annual VPP picnic last week. PNNL Ranked One of Nation's Most Innovative Companies Using Information Technology in its Business
InformationWeek, a leading information technology (IT) trade magazine, has placed Pacific Northwest National Laboratory 54th out of 500 companies in a ranking that determines the country's most innovative companies employing IT in their business.
For 19 years InformationWeek has tracked the technology practices of the nation's most pioneering companies using their annual InformationWeek 500 report. This report examines business and technology best practices and uses the findings to benchmark companies IT strategies. Key report areas include increasing efficiency and productivity, the customer and IT risk management, globalization, IT spending and technologies deployed.
Other notable companies that fell below PNNL in the rankings include Chevron (#72), Verizon Telecom (#86), Computer Sciences Corp. (#90), Dell Inc. (#95), and Dow Chemical (#96). This marks the first time PNNL has made InformationWeek's list.

City of Richland awards PNNL with the 2007 Electronic Stewardship Environmental Excellence Award
On September 18, PNNL was awarded the City of Richland's 2007 Environmental Excellence Award for Electronic Stewardship.
Accepting the award on behalf of PNNL, Marty Conger stated, "We take a tremendous amount of pride in our environmental practices at the Lab, and are very proud to be associated with Richland's green recognition program. I look forward to an even stronger relationship with the City as we continue to improve our environmental practices."
Key to the success of PNNL's environmental stewardship program and members of PNNL's project team for this award are: Chris Armstrong, Marc Berman, Aleta Busselman, Kerry Cullterton, Kim Fowler, Lori Horsley-Fricke, John Jagelski, Janine Jensen, Kami Lowry, Wanda McCollom and Sean Story.
The project team demonstrated the success of the program at PNNL through education, communication, and demonstrations regarding the importance of environmentally friendly electronics management. Throughout the year, the team found ways to minimize waste by continually identifying and mitigating electronic hazards, being aware of requirements and best practices, and continually monitoring and improving Laboratory processes to prevent pollution.
PNNL strives to be a leader in electronics management across the entire product lifecycle - from purchasing to operations through end-of-life. We've made a commitment to implement "green" electronic practices at the Lab which incorporate energy efficiency and environmentally sound management principles. This includes purchasing "green" computers through our Business to Business (B2B) program which provides a compilation of products with the most environmentally friendly technological attributes available. In addition, PNNL enables energy saving options via a standardized imaging process, utilizing centralized systems for software installations, and upgrading computers to increase their lifespan.
Through our donation and recycling policies, we've kept 100% of our electronic waste from landfills and have donated computers in good condition to non-profit organizations as well as schools through the "Computers for Learning" program. In 2006, PNNL donated 321 computer systems, 90 of which went to Richland schools or non-profit organizations and 25 went to the "Hurricane Help for Schools" organization to aid Hurricane Katrina victims.
Remaining computers are sent to public auction where the proceeds are used locally for economic development purposes. Nonworking computers are recycled through the Environmental Protection Agency's list of approved recyclers.
This is the third consecutive year that PNNL has been recognized by the City as it honors and recognizes the environmental efforts of Richland businesses and organizations. In 2005, PNNL was awarded Green Business of the Year; and in 2006, PNNL was awarded the Green Project Award for bringing biofuels into the community. (announced 9/18/2007)
PNNL Receives National Tibbetts Award for Assistance to Small Businesses
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has been selected as a 2007 Tibbetts Award winner for the Laboratory's Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Alerting Service—an electronic newsletter which keeps small businesses informed about federal funding opportunities.
Roland Tibbetts began the SBIR program as a tiny experimental project at the National Science Foundation. Today, the SBIR program has developed more than $21 billion worth of research.
The Tibbetts Awards are given annually to firms, projects, organizations and individuals that have made significant differences for small business organizations.
PNNL's Alerting Service is a first-of-its-kind, e-mail newsletter that provides more than 3,500 subscribers bi-weekly summaries of current information on available SBIR funding, associated workshops, conferences and proposal-writing tips. The Alerting Service extends to more than 11,000 subscribers each month due to the easy forwarding ability of e-mail, which further validates it as a valuable tool for small businesses.
In October, the Laboratory will be officially recognized at the Tibbetts ceremony in Washington, D.C. (announced 9/1/2007)
Federal Electronics Challenge Gold-Level Award
PNNL was awarded the Federal Electronics Challenge Gold-Level Award for "PNNL Stewardship: Conservation through Reuse," awarded by Office of Federal Environmental Executive. The Gold-Level Award Recipients were awareded for their success in reducing the environmental impacts of electronics in all three life-cycle phases, as well as participating in a peer mentoring program. Electronic stewardship actions undertaken by these partners have helped the Federal government improve its sustainable practices when purchasing, managing and disposing of their electronics assets.

PNNL named to the Great Employer for New Grads list compiled by Fortune Magazine and Experience, Inc.
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is recognized on a list of 20 great employers for new college graduates. The list, published today, was commissioned by Fortune Magazine and conducted by Experience Inc., an online career advisor that serves as a link between university career centers and companies looking to hire new graduates.

PNNL recieves Thrid Pollution Prevention Star Award
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) encourages its sites to nominate projects for DOE's internal P2 Star Awards and the White House's Closing the Circle Awards, which both recognize exemplary performance in integrating environmental stewardship practices to reduce risk, protect natural resources, and enhance site operations.
In fiscal year (FY) 2006, PNNL identified pollution prevention related avoidances of $4,159,500 and approximately 13,450 kilograms of hazardous waste. (announced 5/1/2007)
PNNL Wins Excellence Awards for Safety and Security
The Northwest Academic Computing Consortium awarded PNNL two Hugi Excellence Awards for the Lab's outstanding safety and security technologies. The NWACC–a collaboration of universities, research organizations and nonprofit groups in the Pacific Northwest–presents the Hugi Excellence Award for exceptional information technology practices.
PNNL won the NWACC's Technology Infrastructure category for the outdoor campus safety camera system. The system's implementation leverages state-of-the-art wireless mesh technology and commodity wireless technologies. Consisting of 81 cameras, 14 emergency call stations and campus-wide outdoor wireless mesh network, the comprehensive units will improve campus safety, cyber and physical security and emergency response.
The Lab also garnered the award in the IT Management and Administration category for the unclassified cyber security awareness training. Elements of the multi-faceted awareness and education program include on-line training, posters, postcards and newsletters. These materials enhance staff development, policy awareness and protection of the Lab's information. (announced 4/1/2007)

In November 2006, PNNL was recognized as one of America's Safest Companies by Occupational Hazards magazine. The honor is given to a select group of companies each year, small and large, that can demonstrate their safety processes include support from management, involvement from staff, and innovative solutions to safety challenges. The winning organizations also must demonstrate solid safety performance and a commitment to safety education and communications. "They get the symbiotic relationship between productivity, profits, morale and employee retention" said Sandy Smith, chief editor of Occupational Hazards.
"Without the value and commitment that our staff place on safe work practices, this award would not have been possible" said Roby Enge, Director, Environment, Safety, Health & Quality.
PNNL is the first Battelle-affiliated laboratory and multi-program national laboratory to win this respected award. Previous winners include: Alcoa, Bechtel Group Inc., Dow Chemical Co. and DuPont.

Green Business of the Year Award
Green Business of the Year Award, awarded by the City of Richland. The Green Project of the Year – Business Category was awarded to Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Connell Oil for their efforts in bringing biofuel to the community.

Pollution Prevention Star Winnner for "PNNL Stewardship: Conservation through Reuse"
Awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Enviroment, Safety and Health. The P2 Star Award is in its 12th year. This is the second year the Office of Environment, Safety and Health has recognized exemplary performance at DOE sites through the P2 Star Awards system. P2 Star Award selections were made by an independent panel of judges from EPA, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Interior.
This year's eight P2 Star Award recipients were chosen from 33 nominations from across the DOE complex, representing a wide range of outstanding performances in reducing risk, protecting natural resources, and enhancing site operations. PNNL won the Federal Electronics Recycling and Reuse Challenge (FERRC) Award
During last year's challenge, nearly 70 facilities from 11 agencies donated for reuse or recycled a total of approximately 2.5 million pounds of electronic equipment. To win, eleven DOE facilities reused or recycled a total of more than a half million pounds of surplus and end of life electronics over four months.
PNNL was one of the 11 DOE sites that won the award. (announced 6/30/2006)
White House Closing the Circle Award
PNNL was selected as one of the recipients for this year's White House Closing the Circle (CTC) Award. The prestigious award recognizes outstanding achievements of federal employees and their facilities for efforts that resulted in significant contributions to environmental stewardship. The awards focus on waste prevention, recycling, and green purchasing activities under a variety of executive orders. PNNL received the award June 12, 2006 at a White House ceremony in Washington, DC, for its efforts to integrate waste minimization and pollution prevention processes and tools into the Laboratory's Environmental Management System (EMS). More than $2 million in purchasing and waste disposal costs during fiscal year 2005 was avoided through activities such as reduction, reuse, and recycling of equipment, chemicals, office products and construction materials. PNNL earns Better Workplace award from the Assoication of Washington Business
Richland's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory was selected among 19 other companies to recieve the Better Workplace Award for safety from the Association of Washington Business. PNNL provides a safe work environment for its employees and PNNL's Voluntary Protection Program is a partnership between management and staff to continuly improve PNNL's safety culture. Pollution Prevention Award for Sustainable Design
"Design Assessments for the Pit Disassembly and Conversion Facility," awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration.
Early collaboration with design engineers, tailored sustainable design/pollution prevention training, and comprehensive design and process assessments led to identifying and analyzing 33 sustainable design/pollution prevention opportunities across the lifetime of DOE''s Pit Disassembly and Conversion Facility at the Savannah River Site. The result is an estimated $40 million in cost avoidance over the seven-year life of the facility. (announced 1/1/2005)

Go Green – Better Business through Green Power Award
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory was honored for leadership in green power purchases in the Northwest by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 10. Julie Hagensen, Acting Deputy Director, Environmental Protection Agency Region 10, said that PNNL "receives 15 percent of the electrical energy it uses from renewable sources generated in the Pacific Northwest; including PNNL's Marine Sciences Laboratory being supplied by 100 percent green power. PNNL delivers breakthrough science and technology to meet key national needs while maintaining a commitment to protecting the environment. As part of its Environmental Policy, PNNL designs and plans work to prevent pollution, minimize waste, conserve resources, and to properly dispose of or recycle generated waste." The award is part of EPA's Renewable Northwest Project. (announced 10/30/2004)
PNNL earns Environmental Facility award
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory was recognized in October as being one of five outstanding facilities by the Environmental Protection magazine. In so doing, the publication said that PNNL shows "that a forward-thinking approach, industrial development, and greater profit margins can be balanced with a cleaner environment." PNNL is the only one of the government' s laboratories to be honored by the publication's top-five recognition.

PNNL received membership in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Performance Track Program
The Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Performance Track Program recognizes and drives environmental excellence by encouraging facilities with strong environmental records to go above and beyond their legal requirements. Members set typically four public, measurable goals to improve the quality of our nation's air, water, and land. Members include major corporations, small businesses, and public facilities that are steering a course toward environmental excellence.

PNNL earns DOE's Star Award for Buy Bio Program
PNNL identified key opportunities for purchasing biobased products and Continue to imbed bio-based and recycled content requirements into existing processes. PNNL also updated training to incorporate "Buy Bio" information for staff. In FY04, early Buy Bio adopters across the Laboratory analyzed purchases for the best opportunities; developed training, contractual language, and policy; and implemented EPP-related projects. These staff successfully translated PNNL EMS policy, procedures, and guidance into the active purchase of more environmentally preferable products as part of daily work. (announced 6/1/2004)

PNNL earns Training 100 Award from Training Magazine
In recognition of its leadership in staff development and continued management and operations excellence, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has received a 2004 Training Top 100 Award from Training magazine. In its first year as an applicant, PNNL placed 23rd on the list of 100, having been selected from a field of more than 550 applicants. Additionally, PNNL's management skills development program was one of only eight programs recognized as a best practice by Training. (announced 5/30/2004)
PNNL selected as large company of the year.
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has been named Region 6 Large Company of the Year by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for 2004. Region 6 covers the western United States, from Alaska to California, representing more than 56,000 of IEEE's 350,000 international members.
Past winners of this honor include Chevron Texaco and Southern California Edison.
PNNL is being honored for outstanding contributions to engineering, community service and support of technical societies.
[We are honored to receive this award,] said Donald M.Boyd, PNNL's deputy director for operations, [professional societies such as IEEE are a vital part of our technical base, and an award like this is greatly appreciated by our management and staff.]
In the course of the evaluation process, PNNL also was named Large Company of the Year for the Northwest Area of Region 6. Boyd will accept the award on PNNL's behalf at the IEEE Region 6 Awards luncheon on September 22 in Anaheim, Calif.
IEEE (www.ieee.org) was established in 1963, uniting the former American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the Society of Radio Engineers to lead the advancement of technology through disciplines of interest to its members. 2003 Awards
Environmental Excellence Award for Resource Conservation
PNNL was awarded the Environmental Excellence Award for Resource Conservation from the Assoication of Washington Businesses. PNNL has made conservation and energy efficiency key elements of its Facility Energy Management Plan, as encouraged by the Department of Ecology. This plan emphasizes conservation, infrastructure modernization, diversification of utility supplies including renewable energy, system upgrades and sharing best practices. The laboratory's commitment to leadership, applying best industry practices, and using innovative thinking to manage the facility energy and grounds program is demonstrated in the story of the following accomplishments: Exceeding regulatory requirements by purchasing 13.7 percent of its electricity from renewable sources in October 2002; conserving 114 million gallons of water and avoiding sending 16.72 million gallons of water into the sewer system; and in 2002 and 2003 working with Bonneville Power on a "Plug into Savings" project that will save an estimated 8,542,601 kilowatt hours per year. PNNL awarded DOE Energy Champion
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL)was awarded DOE Energy Champion by the U.S. Department of Energy for "Wind Blows Green Energy into National Laboratory." In FY 2002, PNNL agreed to purchase more than 8.7 million kilowatt hours of power produced by a local wind farm for FY 2003. This purchase, combined with a smaller purchase of renewable power, will provide almost 14 percent of the energy for the Laboratory. The purchase implements the measures of Executive Order 13123, Section 204, and exceeds DOE's goal of purchasing 3 percent renewable energy by 2005 and 7.5 percent by 2010. Also, the partnership that PNNL initiated resulted in a renewable energy option for city residents and businesses. It also means PNNL is one of the federal government''s leaders in the use of "green energy." (announced 2/1/2004)
PNNL recognized by U.S. Department of Commerce as one of seven "best practices" federal labs nationwide in economic development
The Department of Commerce has selected the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest national Laboratory as a national model FOR technology - based economic development.The recognition came in report issued Nov. 20, 2003,by the department's Office of Technology Policy.
Of 300 national laboratories, "Partners on a Mission: Federal Laboratory Practices Contributing to Economic Development" singles out seven best-practices federal labs, including PNNL, and two programs for providing regions with access to federally funded technologies and facilities.

PNNL awarded Energy Star Label from the U.S. EPA
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory was awarded the Energy Star Label, from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In fiscal years 2002 and 2003, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, working with Bonneville Power Administration, distributed nearly 10,000 energy-saving Isole® 8-Outlet Power Strips manufactured by Watt Stopper® Inc. as part of its "Plug into Savings" project. The project also worked with management and staff at the Laboratory to eliminate unneeded computers and initiated a project to place inactive computer monitors in standby mode through the network to save energy. The project will save an estimated 8.5 million kilowatt hours and almost $342,000 per year for the Department of Energy at the Hanford Site and other facilities in Richland, Washington. Federal Water Management Award to Small Groups
" Waste not, Water—A Campaign to Conserve Water, " awarded by the U.S. DOE.
During FY 2001, the grounds team at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) applied state-of-the-art grounds management techniques to maintain the landscaping surrounding the PNNL campus. PNNL conserved approximately 114 million gallons of water by using the latest technology to gather data on watering systems, using best-practice landscape methods, monitoring soil moisture, and fertilizing. In addition, PNNL saved approximately 1.5 million gallons of water and subsequently saved almost $3,000 in waste water fees from the city. The facility also avoided sending water into the sewer system, which saved $33,000 in sewer costs. The innovative thinking of this team, which has included the use of predictive water flow models and soil analysis, has yielded substantial environmental, energy, and cost benefits. PNNL awarded Federal Energy Efficiency/Energy Management Awards to Small Groups
PNNL was awarded the Energy Efficiency/Energy Management Awards to Small Groups by the Federal Energy Management Program. The U.S. Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboartory has made conservation and energy efficiency key elements of its Facility Energy Management Plan. As part of PNNL''s plan, PNNL challenged staff to reduce electricity use by 10 percent from the previous year. To provide an incentive, the group devised a contest, and gave the staff tips and guidance on how to accomplish the reductions in their buildings. Over a three-month period, the group compared metered electricity use in several crucial office buildings with figures from the previous year. The staff feedback indicated that the program was popular as well as successful, and will have a lasting impact on workers' habits. Results exceeded expectations and two of the buildings reduced electricity consumption by 37.8 percent during the contest period. Savings amounted to $16,400 and more than 1.4 billion Btu. In 2002, the Federal Interagency Energy Policy Committee (the "656" Committee) presented an Innovative/New Technology Awards to Small Groups to a U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) team that included PNNL lighting expert Carol Jones. The team developed a relighting project for the GSA Peachtree Summit Building atrium using an electrode-less lamp that has a 100,000-hour lamp and uses 42% less energy. PNNL earns ISO 14001 safety certification from International Organization for Standardization
ISO 14001 - Battelle— Pacific Northwest Division (PNWD) uses the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 14001) Environmental Management System (EMS) as a tool to manage, control, and measure environmental impacts. Potential environmental impacts (aspects) from laboratory operations are identified and controlled using several methods. The ISO 14001 EMS is designed to help improve environmental performance, provide for compliance with the law, improve efficiency and effectiveness, reduce costs, and earn and retain regulator and community trust.

DOE Organizational Energy/Energy Efficiency Management Award
In 2001, Federal Interagency Energy Policy Committee (the "656" Committee) presented an Energy Efficiency and Energy Management Award for Organizations to PNNL for recommissioning initiative that had saved $180,000 in expected energy costs. A major portion of the savings was from implementing low-cost actions such as adjusting temperatures and implementing night setbacks on temperatures and ventilation. The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Facilities and Operations Directorate won the Golden Circles Award, the highest honor bestowed by the International Facilities Management Association. PNNL was awarded the Voluntary Protection Program Gold Star. This is the Department of Energy''s highest safety recognition. "For the past few years, our staff and managers have worked hard to demonstrate that PNNL has a strong safety culture where staff and managers share a common belief that all employees are responsible for safety and health in the workplace," said Don Boyd, PNNL deputy laboratory director for Operations, in a message to the PNNL staff. In March 2000, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) initiated a campaign to recommission its buildings and restructure building operations to run more effectively, efficiently, and environmentally. Energy saving strategies included fine-tuning the HVAC system, adjusting temperatures, and implementing more night setbacks. Savings from this no-cost campaign were 23 billion Btu of energy - 61,632 therms of natural gas, and 5 million kilowatt hours of electricity - compared with energy consumption for March through December 2000. PNNL thus avoided more than $180,000 in expected energy costs. (announced 12/20/2000)

In 2000, the U.S. DOE Federal Interagency Energy Policy Committee presented an Energy Efficiency/Energy Management Award to Small Groups award to PNNL for saving $96,000 annually by retuning two large PNNL leased office buildings (the ETB and the NSB Buildings, 200,000 total square feet). Most of the savings were achieved through low-cost recommissioning activities such as resetting heating/cooling equipment schedules and temperatures, and repairing carbon dioxide sensors. The group members were Todd Garlick, Don Hadley, Darrell Hatley, Jeff Lettau, and Ron Underhill. (announced 12/20/2000)
