J-1 Visa
Exchange Visitors
A J-1 visa is for applicants whose primary purpose of travel to the United States is to participate in the Exchange Visitor Program.
The Exchange Visitor Program promotes mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries by educational and cultural exchanges. Exchange Programs provide an extremely valuable opportunity to experience the U.S. and our way of life, thereby developing lasting and meaningful relationships.
There are several different types of Exchange Visitor Programs, including programs for:
- Work as an Au Pair (or nanny)
- Work as a Camp Counselor
- Summer work and travel
- Temporary Study as a College/University Student
- Temporary Study as a Secondary Student
- Distinguished Government or International Visitors
- Physicians
- Teachers, Professors and Research Scholars
- Internships

Each exchange category has specific requirements which are discussed in more detail on the State Department’s J Visa Website.
