On Tuesday, September 22, 2009, the National Weather Service Miami Forecast Office had the honor of formally recognizing Florida International University (FIU) as the newest member of the South Florida StormReady community. FIU is the seventh univesity in Florida and only the second in South Florida to acquire StormReady recognition. With a combined student/faculty/staff population of over 40,000 extending over two campuses and several research facilities, FIU is one of the fastest-growing universities in the region and one of the 25 largest in the country based on enrollment.  Despite the large university population and multiple campuses, FIU has demonstrated full capabilities in receiving critical weather information and disseminating potentially life-saving information to students and staff in an efficient manner. Because of this, the National Weather Service is proud to welcome FIU to the growing StormReady community in South Florida and the country!

2009 An Active Year For StormReady in South Florida

In addition to FIU, Broward County has recently completed their renewal and has been formally re-recognized as a StormReady county through 2012. Hendry County has also completed the application process and has been formally re-recognized.
