Guidelines

  1. The Video must be 60 seconds or less in length.
  2. All submissions should focus on emergency preparedness and reinforce the key message: “Get a Kit, Make a Plan, Be Informed.” This message can be used for personal preparedness or for preparedness at an organizational level. Although we’ve recently read how being prepared for a zombie apocalypse means being prepared for any emergency, videos do not need to include zombies, but creativity is encouraged. 
  3. The Video must be original content created for this contest. Do not submit a video that has been submitted elsewhere or previously displayed publicly through any means.
  4. The Video must be submitted through www.challenge.gov.
  5. The Video must not have visual or verbal mention of any websites other than CDC's Emergency Preparedness website (http://emergency.cdc.gov).
  6. Videos should not include endorsements of private products, services, or enterprises.
  7. Videos containing profane language, violence or weapons, sexually explicit content, or personal attacks on people or organizations will not be considered.
  8. Videos containing material that is obscene, hateful, offensive, or slanderous will not be considered.
  9. Videos containing material that promotes bigotry, racism, hatred, or harm against any group or individual or promotes discrimination based on race, sex, religion, nationality, disability, sexual orientation, or age will not be considered.

 

Official Rules

1.  Eligibility:  The CDC Are You Prepared?  Video Contest is only open to individuals, private or public entities, or groups that meet the following requirements:  In the case of a private entity, the entity must be incorporated in and maintain a primary place of business in the United States, and in the case of an individual, whether participating singly or in a group, must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States who is at least thirteen (13) years of age at the time of entry; if the Contestant/Submitter is under eighteen (18) years of age at the time of entry, the Contestant/Submitter must have permission from a parent or guardian. Contestants/Submitters must also have the permission of the parent or guardian of each person under the age of 18 who is seen or heard in the video. Employees and contractors of CDC and HHS are not eligible, nor are their immediate family members. The Contest is subject to all applicable federal laws and regulations. Participation constitutes Contestant’s full and unconditional agreement to these Official Rules and CDC administrative decisions, which are final and binding in all matters related to the Contest. Eligibility for a prize award is contingent upon fulfilling all requirements set forth herein. An individual or entity shall not be deemed ineligible because the individual or entity used Federal facilities or consulted with Federal employees during a competition if the facilities and employees are made available to all individuals and entities participating in the competition on an equitable basis.

2.  Competition Submission Period and Other Submission Requirements: Contestants must submit their video between August 29, 2011 and October 11, 2011.  Contestants may be individuals or groups (including but not limited to schools, hospitals, community organizations, and health departments). Only one video may be submitted per contestant. Each Contestant must complete and submit the required information on www.challenge.gov for the video he or she enters into the Contest. Groups of more than one individual or entity must submit a contest entry through a single designated individual or entity within the group.  

3.  Intellectual Property Rights: All videos submitted to the CDC Are You Prepared? Video Contest remain the intellectual property of the individuals who developed them.  However, HHS and CDC/ATSDR with a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use, reproduce, publish, distribute and exhibit the submission/winning video in any and all formats or manner for educational, training and other public health purposes consistent with HHS and/or CDC/ATSDR’s mission.  

4.  Submission Topic/Theme: All submissions should focus on emergency preparedness and should in some way reinforce the key message: “Get a Kit, Make a Plan, Be Informed” and direct people to http://emergency.cdc.gov.  Although we’ve recently seen how being prepared for a zombie apocalypse means being prepared for any emergency, videos do not need to include zombies, but creativity is encouraged.

5.  Judges and Winner Selection:  Submissions will be judged by a panel of CDC staff. The panel will judge submissions based on the challenge criteria, namely on creativity, use of the key message (Get a Kit, Make a Plan, Be Informed), and use or inclusion of the CDC emergency website (http://emergency.cdc.gov). Judges will select one winner.  

6.  Winners and Recognition:  The winner will be announced on or about October 28, 2011 on www.challenge.gov and the CDC homepage (www.cdc.gov). The winning video will be highly publicized and featured on the CDC YouTube channel and CDC homepage. No cash prize will be awarded.  

 7.  Publicity:  Except where prohibited, participation in the Contest constitutes the winner’s consent to  use of the winner’s name, likeness, photograph, voice, opinions, and/or hometown and state information by the contest’s sponsors and/or agents for promotional purposes in any media, worldwide, without further payment or consideration.

8.  Copyright:  Contestant warrants that he or she is the sole author and owner of the contest Submission, and that the contest Submission completely originates with the Contestant, that it does not infringe upon any copyright or any other rights of any third party of which Contestant(s) is aware, and is free of malware.

9.  Liability: The Contestant/Submitter agrees to assume any and all risks and waive claims against the Federal Government and its related entities, except in the case of willful misconduct, for any injury, death, damage, or loss of property (including any damage that may result from a virus, malware, etc. to CDC systems utilized to play the video), revenue, or profits, whether direct, indirect, or consequential, arising from their participation in the competition, whether the injury, death, damage, or loss arises through negligence or otherwise. The Contestant/Submitter shall be liable for, and shall indemnify and hold harmless the Government against, all actions or claims for any claim, demand, judgment, or other allegation arising from alleged violation of an individual’s trademark, copyright, or other legally protected interest in video’s submitted to CDC.

 10.  Insurance: Participants shall be responsible for obtaining their own insurance to cover claims by any third party for death, bodily injury, or property damage, or loss resulting from an activity carried out in connection with or participation in the competition.
