Software Developers Strategy

Most tax returns claiming EITC are prepared using software:

  • 86% of all professionally prepared EITC returns and
  • 60% of self-prepared returns.

Due to the impact of this industry in preparing accurate EITC claims, IRS partnered with the software companies and formed the IRS/EITC Software Developers Working Group.

This group identifies best practices and suggestions for software enhancements that:

  • Improve the quality of EITC returns.
  • Improve compliance with EITC due diligence requirements.
  • Increase EITC participation for eligible taxpayers.

The group started in 2008. In 2008, the group focused on improvements to help preparers meet their due diligence requirements. Read more about the Group's 2008 recommended software enhancements here.

In 2009, the group focused on additional training and guidance for tax preparers filing a Schedule C form. Read more about the Group's 2009 preliminary Schedule C Strategy here.

During 2010, the group is:

  • Refining the proposed Schedule C recommendations.
  • Expanding their focus to include the adoption credit and the impact of the new return preparer requirements.
