Eco-friendly Weekend Activities: August 11-12
We hate to admit it in writing, but the last few weeks of summer are here. Take advantage of the sun while shaking up your weekend with some outdoor activities (and reducing your carbon footprint, of course).
Big City Fishing at Hudson River Park: Come learn to fish with the Hudson River Park Trust, who will also give an introduction to ecology and water quality and talk about the many fish species that live in Hudson River Park’s Estuarine Sanctuary. Sunday, August 12, 12:00 –5:00 p.m. (classes offered at pier 46 and pier 84).
Hang out on the High Line – Chelsea’s elevated park provides a place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Not to worry, the High Line features an array of food trucks, so you can grab a bite while enjoying the greenery. Open Daily from 7:00 a.m. – 11 p.m.
The Pop-Up Pool at Pier 2: This summer, take a dip in the beautiful new pool situated off the greenway on the uplands of Pier 2! The pool includes a beach, deck and picnic tables, as well as showers and restrooms, and is open daily from 10:00 a.m. –6:00 p.m.
Support Team USA: Root for your favorite athletes in style during the last weekend of the London Olympics. Screenings held through the closing ceremony on Sunday at Big Screen Plaza (check schedule for complete listing).
Volleyball at Pier 25 – For a mere $30/hour, you and your friends can chip in to enjoy a few friendly (or competitive!) games of volleyball. Reservations can be made online. Saturdays and Sundays, 10 a.m. – 11 p.m.
Walk the Brooklyn Bridge – Sometimes our schedules are so hectic that we forget to stop and look around. Remind yourselves how lucky you are to live in this bustling metropolis by walking over the Brooklyn Bridge and checking out the iconic skyline. The best part? It’s free! (Remember to stop over at Brooklyn Bridge Park and take part in one the of many summer festivities happening there.)
