Can’t wait for Earth Day? Start celebrating early with our suggestions for sustainable activities that will get you in the mood! If you attend one of these events, feel free to share your experience in the comments section.

Book Fair: Reduce, reuse, recycle… and read! Pick up to three books for free at this annual book fair held in Manhattan’s Recreation Center 54. Friday, April 13, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Central Park Bagel Bark: Got dogs? Bring them to Central Park for an early morning social event enjoyed by urban canines and their owners alike. Saturday, April 14, 7:30-9 a.m.

EscapeMaker Local Food and Travel Expo: Does spring fever have you itching to get out of town? Plan your next vacation without blowing your eco-cred. Find out how while sampling locally sourced food at this day-long expo in downtown Brooklyn. Saturday, April 14, noon-5 p.m.

Family Art Project: Head to Wave Hill in the Bronx for a family friendly art activity inspired by the natural beauty of the surrounding gardens. Sunday, April 15, 10 a.m.

LowLine Park: Is New York City’s next park underground? Check out this exhibit for a proposed subterranean park in an abandoned trolley terminal on the lower east side. Learn about progressive solar technology and the reimaging of public space. Sunday-Friday through April 29, 12-6 p.m.

Spring Family Walk: Celebrate spring by hiking the Greenbelt Conservancy’s Nature Trail on Staten Island. The program is appropriate for families with children ages 3 and up. Registration required. Call (718) 351-3450 or email: naturecenter@sigreenbelt.org. Saturday, April 14, 1:30 p.m.

Weekend Woodland Corps: Become a weekend warrior – for the woodlands! Join a team of volunteers working to protect Prospect Park’s forested areas. Saturday, April 14, 9:45 a.m.

    Ah, what a brilliant article. I will definitely involve my kids in such activities. There was an event called plant a tree that took place in New York a few weeks back.

    Should definitely check this website for related eco friendly activities you can participate in with your family.
