Short-Biography

Born and raised in Wilson, North Carollina, Congressman G. K. Butterfield enjoyed a distinguished 30-year legal career as a civil rights attorney, a state Superior Court Judge and North Carolina Supreme Court Justice before being elected to represent North Carolina’s First Congressional District on July 24, 2004.

In Congress, Butterfield is a champion of affordable medical care, education, investments in rural communities, veterans, renewable energies, and federal programs that support low-income and middle-class Americans.

Congressman Butterfield is serving his third term as Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, and also serves as the First Vice-Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus.

He sits on the influential House Energy and Commerce Committee, where he is a member of the Health Subcommittee, the Oversight and Investigation Subcommittee, and the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade.

Congressman Butterfield earned his Bachelor of Arts from North Carolina Central University (NCCU) and his Juris Doctor from NCCU School of Law, both in Durham, North Carolina.  Congressman Butterfield is a veteran of the U.S. Army and a lifelong member of Jackson Chapel First Missionary Baptist Church in Wilson.  He is a proud father and grandfather.
