If you have tax-exempt contributions in the traditional balance of your TSP account, when you make a financial hardship or age-based in-service withdrawal, your payment will contain a proportional amount those contributions.

Any contributions you may have made to the traditional balance of your TSP account from pay subject to the combat zone exclusion will not be subject to Federal or state income taxes.

Remember, you cannot specify the type of money (traditional, Roth, or tax-exempt) that you want to withdraw.

If you have a uniformed services account and a civilian TSP account, you can only make an in-service withdrawal from the account associated with your current employment. If you are in Federal service and the Ready Reserve, you can make an in-service withdrawal from each of your TSP accounts.
