Mentoring

Mentoring is a process by which more experienced individuals assist others to expand their knowledge base, make decisions that are more informed, enhance their careers, increase their networks, and develop in other personal or professional ways. It can occur in formal or informal settings, between seniors and subordinates, peers, subject matter experts and novices, older and younger individuals, or a number of other situations.

It is widely understood that healthy relationships and continuous learning are key to organizational success. When employees are able to connect in meaningful ways with each other and identify with the corporate culture and goals, they are more productive and satisfied with the company and increasingly likely to stay on with the organization.

Many talented people come through the Navy’s doors every day as active or reserve Sailors, civilian employees, and contractors. We have a very capable Navy Total Force and serve our nation’s interests well; we seek to ensure each individual's personal and professional success - facilitated by high quality mentoring.

These pages contain information designed to convey understanding of the benefits of mentoring, to aid in mentor program development, and to facilitate mentor/protégé relationships. The impact of diversity on mentoring is also discussed.

If your Community or Enterprise has developed a tool or process that might be of value to others, please submit for inclusion. Lessons learned, case studies, and other reference material should also be submitted to amberlynn.daniel@navy.mil.
