AFSPC names Air, Space and Cyberspace Operations Award winners

6/21/2011 - PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Air Force Space Command named its 2010 Air, Space and Cyberspace Operations Award winners June 13. These awards honor AFSPC's most outstanding operations units and individuals.
The 21st Space Wing took high honors including the General Thomas S. Moorman, Jr. award for AFSPC's overall outstanding wing, the General Robert T. Herres award for AFSPC's most outstanding wing with a space mission, and the Chief Master Sergeant Robert G. V. Pecqueur award for AFSPC's best space surveillance squadron, which went to the 16th Space Control Squadron.
"Your hard work and dedication resulted in our wing capturing three major AFSPC awards," said Col. Stephen N. Whiting, 21st Space Wing commander. "It's a great honor to win the General Moorman and General Herres awards, and it's a testament to the superb work of the Knights of the 21st Space Wing."
The award is testimony of the wing's mission to conduct precise and disciplined missile warning, missile defense and space control operations.
"There are seven other operational space and cyber wings in Air Force Space Command. These wings do fantastic work each and every day supporting the joint warfighter by defending and operating in and from space and cyberspace," Colonel Whiting said. "So, to put it mildly, it's incredibly humbling to be named the command's outstanding wing for 2010. I am exceptionally proud of the entire team for earning this well deserved recognition while continuing to execute our nationally critical missions of missile warning, missile defense, space control and installation support from locations across the globe.
"Thank you for what you do every day to make our wing a great organization. I am proud to serve with each of you, and congratulations to you all."
Besides winning the two wing awards from AFSPC awards, the 21st also claimed an award for best space surveillance squadron.
"I can't express how proud I am of the men and women of the 16th Space Control Squadron and our total force partners, the 380th Space Control Squadron," said Lt. Col. Paul Tombarge, 21st Operations Group deputy commander. Colonel Tombarge was the 16th SPCS commander at the time. "The hard work and sacrifices they've made to take cutting-edge prototype technologies, make them combat ready, and deploy them in support of our combatant commanders is simply amazing."
The 16th SPCS is AFSPC's first defensive counterspace unit and employs the Rapid Attack, Identification, Detection, and Reporting System. The unit operates space control capabilities to rapidly achieve flexible and versatile space superiority in support of theater campaigns and USSTRATCOM's space superiority mission.
"Winning the Pecqueur award as the best space control squadron in Air Force Space Command is recognition of this hard work and their direct contributions to Operations Enduring Freedom and New Dawn," Colonel Tombarge said. "I am humbled and honored to have been part of their team."
