Norman NOAA Public Affairs: Susan Cobb

Susan Cobb

Susan Cobb is a Meteorologist and Science Writer at the National Severe Storms Laboratory. Her mission is to communicate NSSL’s science to people of all ages and levels of understanding.

Susan first worked at NSSL as an undergraduate meteorological assistant for four years while attending the University of Oklahoma. After graduating with her B.S. degree in meteorology and a minor in communications, she returned to her home in Minnesota and worked as a forecaster for a private forecasting company, giving her an understanding of operational meteorology.

Returning to Oklahoma in 1994, NSSL hired Susan to start a newsletter to communicate their science. She has now written, edited and managed over 27 issues of NSSL Briefings. In addition to the newsletter Susan writes web content, articles, and answers inquiry emails.

As a member of the American Meteorological Society, the National Weather Association, and the National Association of Science Writers, Susan has co-authored a published paper on microburst precursors, written many articles for NOAA and NOAA Research, and has provided technical writing and editing for several handbooks. Early in her career she created hand-drawn illustrations for a medical reference text.

Susan has been married for 18 years to her husband, Steve, a family physician. They have three boys, ages 14, 12 and 9.
