For a few dollars more

No, not the Sergio Leone classic western, but the latest word from the FTC about the fee for telemarketers for complying with Do Not Call.  It’s only right to tell people upfront what something’s going to cost. That’s why the agency wants businesses to know that come October 1st, accessing an area code on the National Do Not Call Registry is going up a buck to $56, with a maximum charge of $15,503 for all area codes nationwide.

Telemarketers are required to download the Do Not Call list to make sure they don’t phone people who have signed up. To get that info, telemarketers have to subscribe each year for access to the Registry. The first five area codes are accessible at no charge and groups that are exempt from Do Not Call rules (like some charities) can get the whole list for free. The access fee — governed by the Do-Not-Call Registry Fee Extension Act of 2007 — had stayed the same since October 2009.

Of course, consumers can add their numbers to the Registry for free.
