Correcting your COPPA calendar

This Thanksgiving, enjoy an extra slice of pie, take a longer nap, and watch the parades and games for a few more hours because that COPPA comment that was due on November 28th now has to be filed by December 23rd.

As part of its ongoing review of rules and guides, the FTC has announced that the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule is under the microscope. The agency published some proposed changes in September 2011 and asked for your feedback. The FTC just extended the deadline for comments to December 23rd, so you have a little more breathing room.

It’s easiest to file online, but if you prefer to go old school, mail or deliver your comment to: Federal Trade Commission, Office of the Secretary, Room H-113 (Annex E), 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington, DC 20580. Write COPPA Rule Review, 16 CFR Part 312, Project No. P-104503 on the comment to make sure it gets to the right people.

In the meantime, brush up on compliance obligations by reading You, Your Privacy Policy and COPPA — and pass the gravy.
