Headquarters Marine Corps

Assistant Deputy Commandant, Ariane L. Whittemore

Ms. Whittemore is the Assistant Deputy Commandant, Programs and Resources, Headquarters Marine Corps.  In this capacity she manages the Marine Corps’ Planning, Programming, Budgeting, and Execution System (PPBES), ensures policy compliance and funding of priority needs and affordability.  She also provides advice and assistance to senior leadership and monitors and supports Congressional interest areas.

Prior to her current assignment, Ms. Whittemore served as Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Manpower and Reserve Affairs) and Program Executive Officer, Executive Lifecycle Management for the Deputy Secretary of Defense.  Ms. Whittemore gained Joint policy and Human Capital Management experience as Special Assistant to the Principal Deputy Under Secretary of Defense (Personnel and Readiness) and Joint operational experience as Senior Civilian Advisor to the Commander and Chief of Staff, Strategic Planning and Policy, U.S. Pacific Command.  Ms. Whittemore was selected as a member of the Senior Executive Service (SES) in 1994.  Her other SES assignments include: Assistant Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Fleet Readiness and Logistics), Acting Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Fleet Readiness and Logistics), Director, Business and Civilian Resources and Director, Budget and Management Policy and Procedures, Office of Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Financial Management/Comptroller).   Ms. Whittemore also served on the Board of Trustees of the Naval Home, Gulfport, Mississippi from 1995-1999.

From 1980 to 1994, Ms. Whittemore served in a number of financial management positions at both the headquarters and field level with the Navy and Marine Corps.

Ms. Whittemore graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa. She completed a master’s degree program in Public Financial Management at American University, Washington D.C. 

Ms. Whittemore’s awards include:  Presidential Meritorious Executive (2 Awards), DON Distinguished Civilian Service, DON Superior Civilian Service, Joint Meritorious Service, American Society of Military Comptrollers Comptroller of the Year.
