Bariatric Surgery
The full spectrum in the surgical treatment of obesity is available at Eisenhower Army Medical Center. As part of a multidisciplinary approach, patients undergo a comprehensive evaluation in preparation for the weight loss procedure. This includes evaluation by psychiatry, nutrition, and an opportunity to work with the physicians at the Wellness Center . Once the preoperative preparation is completed, there are a variety of procedures offered for surgical weight loss. We have a full time bariatric nurse on staff that will ensure all preoperative evaluations are met and track every patient through the different stages to ensure a quick and efficient road to surgery. This hospital has a bariatric support group that meets on the second Tuesday of each month. The support group is run by past patients and is a great source for information and support. The following are surgeries are offered at DDEAMC.
Laparoscopic and open gastric bypass procedures: formation of a small (30 mL) gastric pouch with a 100 cm bypass of the small bowel. It works both as a restrictive and malabsorptive procedure.
Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy: Formation of a tubular stomach with no bypass. It works as a restrictive procedure.
Laparoscopic gastric banding: placement of a band attached to a port around the proximal portion of the stomach. It works as a restrictive procedure.
