5/19/2011 - MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan -- Although Misawa Air Base continues to return to normal, energy conservation measures are
still in effect. The 35th Fighter Wing commander is asking that base residents continue taking steps to help conserve energy.
The power available to Misawa AB is still limited and will continue to be so for many months as a result of the March 11 earthquake and tsunamis. Misawa AB is one of the largest users of energy consumption in the area, according to Capt. Ricky Cam, 35th Civil Engineer Squadron programs flight chief.
"Conservation is important at Misawa, not only to help the off-base community, but because it is the right thing to do" said Capt Cam. "We must do our part to help even if it's just as little as conserving energy."
To help conserve energy here are some things base residents can do:
Temperature Settings
· Maximize use of natural ventilation as temperatures rise into the summer
· Observe maximum heating temperature setting of 20 C/68 F while at home and 13 C/55 F when you leave
· Ensure doors and windows are shut at all times if your heat or air conditioning is operational
Lighting
· Maximize use of daylight - use windows instead of ceiling lights
· Check that all exterior lights are off during daylight hours
· Shut off all lights when you leave the room/facility
· Double check that you are using compact fluorescent bulbs. Free bulbs are available in Self Help for military family housing residents
Remember to "Turn if Off"
· When not in use turn off computers, computer monitors, printers, copiers and game consoles
Transportation
· As the weather improves, maximize use of bikes, motorcycles and walking
· Share rides and strategically plan trips
Water Conservation
· Limit showers
· Wash dishes by hand or use the shortest setting on your dishwasher
· Wash clothes on the minimum timed setting
More energy is used during peak hours of 10 a.m. to noon and 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. During this time remember to limit use of washers, dryers and dishwashers. Use only one computer or television, turn heat down and minimize use of lighting.
Misawa residents like Tech. Sgt. Noel De Los Santos, 35th Fighter Wing flight safety, are already beginning to adopt a conservation mindset. "I do my part to conserve energy by using the ambient light during the day," said Sergeant De Los Santos, 35th Fighter Wing flight safety. "It's easy to conserve energy and can be done by using common sense."
