Beyond the Border recognizes that today’s threats to our mutual security are global, complex, rapidly evolving, and sophisticated. As many of these threats require cross-border cooperation, greater information sharing between Canada and the United States is vital to enhancing our countries’ shared security.

Our countries have a long history of sharing information responsibly while respecting our separate Constitutional and legal frameworks governing the protection of privacy. Responsible information sharing facilitates and promotes the flow of accurate, relevant, timely, and necessary information to address threats to security while respecting civil liberties.

Through the Beyond the Border Action Plan, the United States and Canada commit to protecting privacy in all the initiatives undertaken. To inform and guide our work, we are developing joint privacy principles to inform and guide sharing of personal information. The principles will be consistent with existing domestic laws in the United States and Canada, respectively.
