STOP: Field Position

The Stop Transmission of Polio (STOP) program at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recruiting field public health workers to participate on STOP teams. The World Health Organization (WHO), which partners with CDC on the STOP program, places these immunization experts in the field to work on Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) surveillance systems and supplemental immunization activities (SIAs).

STOP field participants will be assigned to work with a national counterpart on activities that may include any of the following:

• Improving acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance
• Monitoring and improving the quality of polio immunization campaigns (“supplemental immunization activities”, or SIAs)
• Monitoring and improving the quality of other SIAs such as national immunizations days (NIDs) and measles catch-up immunization campaigns
• Improving routine immunization services

STOP field participants need to be extremely flexible self-starters who can work well under difficult conditions with people of different cultures.

Position Requirements

STOP is seeking experienced public health workers including medical epidemiologists, public health nurses, and public health professionals. The following experience and qualifications are desired:

• Experience working on communicable disease or vaccine-preventable disease surveillance, especially AFP surveillance
• Experience working on SIAs, NIDs or other SIAs
• Experience  implementing, monitoring, and evaluating immunization programs
• Experience conducting disease outbreak investigations
• Previous international work
• Five to seven years of relevant public health experience
• Fluency in English
• Fluency in a second language, particularly French; Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, and Spanish are also useful
