Burgess Statement on Senate Immigration Reform Proposal

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (Texas-26) released the following statement regarding the Senate’s immigration reform proposal:

“While the Senate proposal includes several provisions aimed at improving the enforcement of our current immigration laws, it fails to ensure the integrity of the legal immigration process. We need to ensure that our borders are secure and employers are hiring those who are legal to work in America. We have programs in place, such as E-verify, that make employment verification easy and efficient. I am adamant about enforcement, especially when employers go outside the law and hire those who are not here legally.  Rewarding those who enter this country illegally is not only reckless, but blocks opportunities for the 12 million American citizens who are currently unemployed and costs taxpayers more money.”

I agree 100% that it is stupid to reward those here illegally. I debate with a co-worker all the time and he is for giving them licenses and say stuff like they do jobs Americans don't want, etc. While a small percentage of jobs they may do, by far more jobs they are stealing from Americans that would do those jobs.

Please spend some time discussing the use of work and business visas. This is especially significant for research, technology and construction. Keep up your hard work especially on the Health Care Caucas.

I agree with you Sir. Being fair to legal immagrants is very important. I believe that President Obama is trying to gain votes for the Democrat Party.

I do not support any reform that gives people here now illegally a legal status. They have been breaking our laws for years. Reagan tried this before, said we never have to do it again. I understand that we need low skilled labor in the States, and I have no problem with us allowing more people to come to work in the US. But there are millions of people from other countries that have been trying legally to get into the US. Respecting our laws, they should be the ones that get rewarded. Why has Texas not filed a lawsuit against Obama? Texas doesn't seem to care if illegals live here either. They are too blame also. Like I said, it would be very easy to reform immigration. First, open up more visas for non skilled labor which must be applied in their home country. If anyone has ever been caught in the US before, that person is bared from getting a visa. Also the visas only need to include the worker, not his/her family. Thy must pay SSI and Medicare and they don't qualify unless they (after time) becomes a US Citizen. That also will also help with out problems with them. Also, any employeer that wants to hire them, must provide medical insurance for them. Also change the Constitution to exclude people born in the Country to parents that were here illegally from being US citizens.

I totally agree....I just don't understand how so many other Congressmen and Senators don't think this way.

Immigration reform of sorts was done some years back. Now we have as many or more illegal (yes, I used that word) aliens as we had them. What in this bill will assure us that in a few more years, we won't be at this very same point again with millions of illegal people?

With Obamacare now being out there for several years, what additionally have we found that will not reduce costs? My insurance costs have not decreased. How many people will the immigration "reform" add to the "free" side of Obamacare that we, the taxpayer, will have to pay for?

The latest trend on the Democratic side, both the President and at least one Democrat Congress person, say we don't have a spending problem. In fact, Pres. Obama told Speaker Boehner, he didn't want to hear that statement anymore, and that there is not a spending problem. So if there is not a spending problem, and the President has told the American people that he won't increase taxes on the middle class, how does the Democratic side put forth that the deficit will be reduced and we will have a balanced budget any time soon?

    Well said!

Sir, that is exactly what i hope to hear from my congressman. Thank you

I agree with your Immigration Reform statement 100%. In general, I believe the Republican Party is more concerned with being reelected, receiving perks, etc. rather than banding together and taking a firm stand against all of Obama's socialistic plans. I don't believe the United States of America and the Constitution that I still believe in can survive Obama for the remainder of his term in office. I would like for you to hear your opinion on what it will take, what we can do to turn our country around before it is too late. Know that you are appreciated for your courageous stand on these difficult issues. With God, all things are possible and you have my prayerful support.

With the illega immigration situation, the only reason for doing what Obama wants to do is garner more votes for his party to keep it in power. This will happen if millions of illegals are basically given amnesty and citizenship, on welfare and destroying our basic infrastructure. The Border problem should be easy to understand. Put the President and Congressmen and Senators in a sealed room. There is a one inch drain hose at the bottom of the room. There is a 6 inch pipe pouring water in from the top. What's the priority here? Stopping the water from coming in at a faster rate than it's going out or vice versa. Simple logic! As far as gun control goes. Historical facts show that countries where people have to give up their guns have more crime! Another obvious observation!

I agree with regarding enforcement of current laws and improving border security. but you are wrong in the rest of your staatement. There is an underground economy supported by the people who are here illegally which provides jobs for people who want to work. If this economy is brought into the daylight all taxpayers will benifit.

Thanks Congressman Burgess and keep up the great work. The immigration argument seems to be based more on emotion than logic. A major issue that was ignored when Regan tried immigration reform, and what is missing in this latest discussion; is the nationality of anchor babies. Congress has the authority right now to change the way we determine citizenship. America is one of the few countries left in the world that does not deem the citizenship of a new born born to a foreign national (illegal or otherwise) to be that of the birth mother. Fix that and we significantly reduce the attractiveness of coming to America illegally.
  • Aggie from Denton commented on 2/8/2013
We are behind you and your common sense approach towards a solution to the immigration problem. Why are those who are against ILLEGAL immigration yet for LEGAL immigration vilified and belittled. Unenforced borders are the same as no border thus no sovereign country.
  • Stewart from Denton commented on 2/9/2013
Please do not compromise the emphasis on border security. Stated simply, No border security, no immigration reform.
  • nan from carrollton commented on 2/14/2013
Agree w/Stewart (Denton) no security, no reform. Wish I could believe Rubio's idea of simultaneously starting reforms would work--adm. won't follow law. Also would like to know more about what obamacare does to offering those benefits immediately, vs. Rubio's idea. Thank you for all you do.
