1/17/2012 - MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan -- Misawa Air Base depends on cyber security to ensure mission accomplishment, but who makes sure security protocols are followed correctly?
Inspectors from Scott Air Force Base, Ill. are scheduled to inspect Misawa's Information Assurance Program here from March 19-30. Inspectors will be looking into every aspect of information assurance, which consists of communication security, computer security and emissions security.
The purpose of IA is to manage risks related to the use, transmission and storage of information and data on computer systems and secure networks, said Master Sgt. Thomas Parker, 35th communications squadron, section chief wing information assurance officer.
To make sure Misawa is well prepared for the upcoming inspection, some units will be receiving pre-inspections, said Airmen 1st Class Jeremy Donahue, 35th communication squadron, emission security technician.
Here is a list of things Airmen should prepare for before the inspections:
· Anyone with Common Access Cards should not leave them unattended or logged onto computers when they are not present.
· Airmen should know how to use the 35th Fighter Wing's network incident reporting aid card and should have one next to their computer.
· Airmen should not use unauthorized electronics such as iPhones, thumb drives and other flash media on Air Force computers.
· Airmen should know how to handle phishing and e-mail scams.
· Airmen should know who their information assurance officer is in their unit.
"Following these tips will help ensure network security and prepare Airmen for the upcoming inspection," said Parker. "As long as we work together, we are going to pass. I have no doubt in my mind."
