Recent News from FDA and NIH

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently announced the following news: 

• July 16, 2012: FDA Approves First Drug for Reducing the Risk of Sexually Acquired HIV Infection
  
  “[The] U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Truvada (emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate), the first drug approved to reduce the risk of HIV infection in uninfected individuals who are at high risk of HIV infection and who may engage in sexual activity with HIV-infected partners. Truvada, taken daily, is to be used for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in combination with safer sex practices to reduce the risk of sexually-acquired HIV infection in adults at high risk.”

• July 18, 2012: NIH to Test Maraviroc-Based Drug Regimens for HIV Prevention
  
  "Scientists are launching the first clinical trial to test whether drug regimens containing maraviroc, a medication currently approved to treat HIV infection, are also safe and tolerable when taken once daily by HIV-uninfected individuals at increased risk for acquiring HIV infection. The eventual goal is to see if the drug regimens can reduce the risk of infection.”

AIDSinfo at the XIX International AIDS Conference

The XIX International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2012) takes place Sunday, July 22 through Friday, July 27 in Washington DC. AIDSinfo will participate in the conference in a variety of ways.

Under the umbrella of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)/National Library of Medicine (NLM) (Booth 72):

• Stop by NLM’s Guidelines, Clinical Trials, and Information Resources kiosk to learn more about AIDSinfo and infoSIDA, see demonstrations of our mobile tools and resources, and learn about other HIV/AIDS resources available from NLM.
• Plan to attend a presentation on HIV/AIDS Resources from the National Library of Medicine on Monday or Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The presentation, which is part of NIH’s “Meet the Experts” series, will include an overview of HIV/AIDS information resources available from NLM, including PubMed, MedlinePlus, the NLM AIDS Portal, AIDSinfo, and infoSIDA. AIDSinfo 7th Edition HIV/AIDS Glossary Now Available in Spanish

Recently released on infoSIDA, the Spanish 7^th edition Glossary of HIV/AIDS-Related Terms provides Spanish-language speakers with the same information available in the updated English version of the glossary: 

• Definitions for more than 700 HIV/AIDS-related terms
• A resource section listing organizations that provide HIV/AIDS-related services
• An appendix that includes all antiretroviral drugs approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of HIV

The Spanish-language glossary also includes a translation guide that provides an alphabetical listing of all terms in the glossary in English paired with their Spanish translations. The guide offers individuals and organizations a standard vocabulary of HIV/AIDS-related terms to use when developing Spanish-language materials.

The Spanish-language glossary is available on the infoSIDA website in electronic and printable formats and on the infoSIDA mobile site.
