Green Roof

Officials at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., opened a new fitness center Aug. 20, 2010, that is expected to reach the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum level thanks to energy savings and environmentally friendly technologies, including these solar panels, or photovoltaics. The building also features cool-roof technology and a solar-generated hot-water system which are expected to help achieve a 9-percent energy savings for the building. Bob Miller lifts the last of 112 Loggerhead sea turtle eggs from a nest to a cooler lined with beach sand Aug. 9, 2010, at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. The eggs are being transported to the Atlantic Coast, where they will be allowed to hatch in the cooler at a controlled climate facility. Wildlife technicians then will release them into the ocean.
