As peacetime draws nearer, the Pentagon is grappling with a vital question: How can the military keep its soldiers engaged and fighting fit, both physically and mentally?

Doctrine expert talks to CGSC staff, faculty

Fort Leavenworth, Kan. - When he was an instructor with the Combat Studies Institute, Walt Kretchik kept hearing the phrase, the "last war." Army leaders were always trying to fight the last war, Kretchik was told, they didn't consider current events and couldn't be innovative.

"But it didn't make sense from the perspective of how armies train, how they organize ... what bothered me is that we're teaching this, we're teaching our students that this is exactly the way it is," Kretchik said

Kretchik published a book, "U.S. Army Doctrine: From the American Revolution to the War on Terror," in September 2011 with some of his findings. He spoke to staff and faculty at the Command and General Staff College Nov. 10 as part of a professional development effort by the Faculty and Staff Development Division.

Center for Army Leadership wants survey responses

Fort Leavenworth, Kan. - Soldiers are asked to fill out many surveys each year. But the Center for Army Leadership at Fort Leavenworth wants Soldiers to know that one survey coming out this month is too important to ignore.

The Center for Army Leadership, or CAL, Annual Survey of Army Leadership, known as CASAL, is read at the highest levels and has brought actual changes to the Army.

Although Soldiers might not have heard of the CASAL, they've certainly seen the results, said Command Sgt. Maj. Philip Johndrow, the former command sergeant major for the Combined Arms Center.

For instance, all the recent discussions about "toxic leadership" in the Army started with last year's CASAL results, he said

"That was a result of the survey, so you know your voice is being heard when you see it in the Army Times and all these other places," Johndrow said. "It's the talk of the town now."

Army civilians also believe improvements could be made in developing their subordinate leaders, building effective teams, creating a positive environment, leading by example, and communication.

"To clarify, Army civilians perceive that their leadership is favorable. My interpretation of the data is that many of their perceptions did not change from last year to this year," Steele said

Fort Leavenworth, Kan. - Fort Leavenworth's airfield runway has passed tests and was cleared to reopen

Fort officials were concerned that flooding earlier this year could have damaged the runway. The Missouri River was flooded during the summer as a result of the Army Corps of Engineers release of additional water at Gavins Point Dam in South Dakota. Engineers said heavy rain and snowfall the previous winter was reason for the additional release of water. The river flooded many communities, with Iowa and Missouri sustaining much of the damage. Some areas, including homes and farmland, were underwater for months.
