5/14/2012 - MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan -- The 35th Civil Engineer Squadron customer service section has taken over materiel management control at Misawa Air Base, Japan, to become more responsive to customers' needs.

Previously, the 35 CES materiel control was handled by the 35th Logistics Readiness Squadron, said Ikuko Tazawa, 35 CES general supply specialist. Now the 35 CES controls their own stock.

The change allowed 35 LRS Airmen to be available for other duties in their work section and for the 35 CES Airmen to work with their own materials, which helps to free up manning.

"We adopt the component from LRS and they don't have to supply us with manning," said Airman 1st Class Jaquelynn Douglas, 35 CES customer service associate. "We can do our own manning and work with our own stock."

Customer's needs are met quicker now that the 35 CES has control of their own stock and they do not have to wait for the parts, said Douglas. They can respond faster because they have the materials on hand, she added.

Douglas said this process allows customers to ask the 35 CES if they have the part in their stock, which saves customers time.

"Now that we have control of our stock, we can cut the time it would take for a part to come in," said Douglas. "At times, it would take nine months to receive the parts we ordered."

Previously, paperwork would keep the parts from reaching the 35 CES for extended time periods. Now, without paperwork it only takes days instead of months to receive parts.

The new process also has an impact on base missions and the reduced waiting period saves time.

"This is a good process because it allows us to keep an emergency stock of parts that are very important to the mission," said Douglas. "Having this, we can replace the parts easier rather than ordering the parts and waiting for them to get here."
