10/19/2011 - Scott Air Force Base, Ill. -- Breast cancer has an incredible impact on society, both emotionally and financially. Medical officials estimated there will be 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer in 2011. Current screening methods are important ways to help detect breast cancer early. Screening methods include self-awareness, clinical breast exams, and mammograms. How can you help yourself, friends and family?

First, know your family health history and talk with your doctor about the best screening options for you. Second, get up-to-date with your breast cancer screening. Third, know what is normal for you. Get to know your own breasts. See your health care provider immediately if you notice any masses, changes in size, dimpling or puckering of the skin, persistent pain or anything that is unusual for you.

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, current screening guidelines include clinical breast exams at least every three years starting at age 20 and yearly mammograms starting at age 40.

There remains some debate regarding the age at which a woman should undergo a first mammogram. Clearly this should occur no later than 50 and at an earlier age for some women. The best way to proceed is to have a conversation with your care provider so you can make the best decision for your particular medical situation and your personal comfort level.

Breast cancer awareness month is the time to take action and get current with your screening. Let's try to decrease the estimated 39,520 lives breast cancer will claim next year.
