SSD Sponsors Workshop on Promoting Education About Standardization in North America
by SSD Staff May 08, 2009
A May 8, 2009, workshop sponsored by the TS/Standards Services Division examined the current state of education about standardization in academia and as professional/continuing education. This workshop was built on the premise that offering education on standardization will strengthen the standards development infrastructure in the United States.
Over 50 participants from major academic institutions joined experts from industry, the standards development community, and government. Panels of experts reported on: ongoing initiatives to formalize standards training in academia and industry, various pedagogical approaches and teaching tools used in the workplace and academia (including a recently released standards simulation exercise), and how major standards developers are now integrating formal and informal education and training into their programs.
A final panel focused on how the educational landscape might adapt and change. Opportunities cited included: the changing nature of educational institutions, cooperating with the educational accreditation bodies, greater interdisciplinarity, collaboration with industry, the promotion of open standards, and a greater global focus. The importance of NIST's role was also discussed.
