2011
  • VA Employees Win The Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medal:
    Two VA employees have won The Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medal, which honors outstanding federal workers who are making high-impact contributions critical to the health, safety and well-being of Americans. 
    • Alfonso Batres, a Vietnam Veteran and Chief Officer of Readjustment Counseling Service, won the Career Achievement Medal
    • W. Todd Grams, Acting Assistant Secretary for Management and Chief Financial Officer, won the Management Excellence Medal
 
 
  • 2011 Green Routine Award Winners Find Creative Ways to Green Facilities
    Launched in the fall of 2009, the Green Routine Awards program recognizes VA employees who have contributed to a greener workplace by creating effective grassroots programs.  Nominees invest time outside of their daily duties to encourage their coworkers in green practices that make a difference in a VA facility’s environmental performance

  • Small Business Contracting Leaders:
    VA was recognized by the Small Business Administration with a rating of “A” on its Small Business Scorecard for its success in contracting with small businesses. VA led the federal government in procurements with service-disabled Veteran-owned small businesses, awarding nearly 17 percent of its acquisition dollars to those companies

  • Best Employers for Workers Over 50:
    Veterans Health Administration (VHA) was named as one of the best employers for workers over the age of 50 by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP)
 
  • Olin Teague Award:
    Dr. Gregory Goodrich, research psychologist, and Dr. Glenn Cockerham, chief of ophthalmology, won the Olin Teague Award, a national award that recognizes contributions that improve the quality of life of war-injured Veterans. Their research showed that service members exposed to combat blasts who sustained traumatic brain injury often had undiagnosed visual disorders and eye injuries 
 
  • Cheers Awards for Safe Medication Practices:
    VA won top national honors from the independent Institute for Safe Medication Practices for its excellence in preventing medication errors. The Cheers Awards honor individuals that set a high standard for keeping patients safe and improving the process of using medication
