Veterans Health Administration Workers' Compensation Program

The Workers’ Compensation Program (WCP) has increasingly strove for optimal quality and timeliness in the WCP process in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) of the Department of Veterans Affairs. The WCP has permitted all stakeholders involved to have improved communications in person or electronically in this important employee benefit.

It is the VHA’s goal to have effective educational and mentoring experiences for every level in our organization. Other positive infrastructure and structure changes have included:

  • Health Analysis and Information Group surveys to focus on the Strategic Planning process of the WCP
  • Annual face-to-face conference for the Veteran’s Health Administration Worker’s Compensation Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) Coordinators
  • Pocket Cards explaining “How To Report A Work-Related Incident” for Supervisors and Employees
  • Deputy Undersecretary for Health for Operations and Management (DUSHOM) Network Performance Monitor of two per fiscal year
  • Timely submission of Department Of Labor’s Federal Employee Compensation Act (FECA) claims has improved from a low of 44% to the present level of 95%
  • Aggressive return to work efforts during the acute post injury phase and for those on the periodic rolls
  • Provided training at the National Union and Facility Safety staff to increase the basic knowledge level of individuals actively involved during a stressful period for the injured employee
  • Program Improvement Projects to improve structure, process and analysis of the WCP
