Active Duty
- 2012-2013 Air Force Aid Society General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant Program: Since its inception in 1942, the Air Force Aid Society (AFAS) has been committed to helping Air Force members and their families realize their academic goals. In recent years, the Society's emphasis has been on direct funding of new initiatives that provide greater value to Air Force families.
- Spouse Employment Training Program: Forty-three Air Force installations were selected to participate in this program, sponsored by the Air Force Aid Society (AFAS). The following training will be administered by Airman & Family Readiness Centers: MS Office, Customer Service, Virtual Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, Certified Nursing Assistant, and Medical Terminology Training. Grant proposals are submitted to Air Force Aid Headquarters by base-level Airman & Family Readiness Centers.
- Air Force Aid Society (AFAS) Grants: AFAS plans to award up to 3,000 grants to dependents of Air Force members for their college education through the General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant Program. This grant program is open to dependent children of active duty personnel, Title 10 Reservists on extended active duty, Title 32 AGR performing full-time active duty, retired, retired reservists and deceased Air Force members. Spouses of active duty members and surviving spouses of deceased personnel are also eligible. All applicants must be enrolled as full-time undergraduates at an accredited college or university during the 2011-2012 academic year, and are required to maintain a minimum 2.0 Grade Point Average. Applications for these $2,000 need-based grants are now available from the Society's website, http://www.afas.org/.
Civilian Employment
Opportunities for College Graduates
 The United States Air Force employs more than 143,000 civilians in a full range of occupations. The need to recruit and develop future leaders is a top priority for the Air Force.
There are two Air Force recruiting programs aimed at college graduates:
These programs provide full-time civilian employment opportunities for personal and professional growth in over 20 career fields with 2-4 years full-time on-the-job-training and performance-based annual promotions while in training. U.S. citizenship and mobility are required.
Upon completing the hiring process, PALACE Acquire and COPPER CAP participants begin at the GS-7 grade level with target grades ranging from GS-11 or GS-12, depending on the occupation. Check out our civilian employment resources web page for current pay rate based on the grades.
Internship Opportunities
The United States Air Force also employs and provides internship opportunities for current college students. These programs provide students the opportunity to gain valuable experience and help prepare them for possible future USAF employment.
- Military Extension Intern Program - A partnership with Purdue University, USDA, DoD, and the USAF provides internship opportunities at Air Force Youth Centers, Child Development Centers, and other Force Support activities. As an intern, you will live and work on military installations around the globe for 10 weeks to 6 months. Internship locations in the past include Washington D.C., New Orleans, and Ramstein, Germany. The range of experience is broad, including working directly with children and youth, implementing programs that address their needs, and learning to manage child and youth centers. Scholarships
In 2012, the Scholarships for Military Children Program celebrated a major milestone as it reached more than $10 million in scholarships awarded to 6,742 students from around the globe.
Applications for the 2013 Scholarships for Military Children Program will be available starting Dec. 3 at commissaries worldwide. You can also find them online through a link at http://www.commissaries.com and directly at http://www.militaryscholar.org.

Childcare Assistance
The Military Child Care in Your Neighborhood program provides fee assistance for Families of Active Duty Airmen and Air Force Technicians who are unable to access on-base child care. Families living within 15 miles or 20 minutes of on-base child care must be on the waitlist before applying for fee assistance.

Military Homefront is the central, trusted, up-to-date source for service members and their families regarding all Department of Defense quality of life programs and services. Whether you live the military lifestyle or support those who do, you'llfind what you need at Military Homefront.
Military One Source
Military OneSource is provided by the Department of Defense at no cost to active duty, Guard and Reserve (regardless of activation status) and their families. It is a virtual extension of installation services.
Military Installations
Military installations provides details on installation programs and services; mapping data and driving directions; links to local community points of interest; and the ability to search the web for additional information on the installation itself or the surrounding area.
Don't Lose TRICARE Eligibility
When a new member of your family arrives, it is important that you take the necessary steps to ensure continuous TRICARE health-care coverage. Your child must be registered in DEERS, and you will need to enroll your child in TRICARE if your want continuous TRICARE coverage. Your child can lose TRICARE benefits if you fail to comply within established TRICARE timelines.
Congress authorizes paternity leave
Eligible Airmen are now authorized 10 days of nonchargeable paternity leave following the birth of their newborns, courtesy of the 2009 Duncan Hunter National Defense Authorization Act passed by Congress.
Preparing for Deployment: Talk, Listen, Connect: Deployments, Homecomings, Changes
This bilingual multimedia outreach program is designed to support military families with children between the ages of 2 and 5 as they cope with the feelings, challenges and concerns experienced during different phases of deployment. The DVD kit includes a copy of the first video Talk, Listen, Connect: Helping Families During Military Deployment and new additional video and parent/caregiver materials designed to help children of injured veterans and other returning service members adjust to the changes in their parents.

Parenting 24/7

Military Family Life Consultant Program (MFLC)
The MFLC provides workshops and nonmedical, short-term counseling services to help Airmen and their families cope with stressful situations created by deployments and reintegration.
Locating a Military Family Life Consultant
Military Family Life Consultants help Airmen and their families cope with the stressful and often adverse situations created by deployments and reintegration. These consultants are also responsive to crisis and emergency situations. Support has been implemented to many of our Air Force installations, and may be accessed by contacting the Airman & Family Readiness Center closest to you. American Geriatrics Society
The society is a not-for-profit organization of more than 6,700 health professionals devoted to improving the health, independence and quality of life of all older people. The society implements and advocates programs in patient care, research, professional and public education, and public policy.
American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging
Represents not-for-profit organizations dedicated to providing high-quality health care, housing and services to the nation's elderly. Its membership consists of more than 5,000 not-for-profit nursing homes, continuing-care retirement communities, senior housing facilities, assisted-living and community services.
National Family Caregiver Support Program
Part of the Association on Aging Web site, the Caregiver Resource Room is where families, caregivers and professionals can find information about the National Family Caregiver Support Program, including: where to turn for support, assistance and services.
