Security challenges mar Afghan-Pakistan border region
Foreign combat troops are expected be out of Afghanistan within three years. But a decade into their mission, security remains precarious. In Sar Howza in Paktika province, a new district governor has been appointed - the second in just four weeks - after the previous governor was killed in a Taliban attack. Mohammed Hakim, a mullah or religious teacher thought to be linked with the attack, is now in custody. But many people in the district fear the Taliban will take revenge on them if he is not released. With no permanent security presence in most villages, the government cannot get an influential foothold - a challenge that is experienced all along Afghanistan's border with Pakistan. Al Jazeera's Bernard Smith reports from eastern Afghanistan.

Afghan army lacks specialist capabilities
Of the 290 Afghan army battalions, the US military says only 18 are able to operate independently today. Coalition advisers, who have increasingly taken a supporting role to the Central Asian nation's security forces, say local forces still lack specialist capabilities like surveillance, aviation, and clearing roads of bombs. For many Afghans, as the December 2014 deadline for an international troop withdrawal nears, there is an increasing fear of a breakdown in security when local forces are left to their own devices. Bernard Smith reports from Nad Ali in the southern province of Helmand, where he joined one Afghan army unit to see how they operate on their own amid the increasing push to take a leading role in their nation's security.

Extended Footage of Drunk and Stoned Jorge Scientific Corp. Security Contractors in Afghanistan
Video of Jorge Scientific security contractors drunk in war zone Afghanistan. Conduct like this forced whistleblowers to resign and come forward and file a lawsuit. The Employment Law Group® law firm represents two former employees of Jorge Scientific, Kenneth Smith and John Melson, who claim that Jorge Scientific failed to meet its responsibilities as a government contractor and engaged in irresponsible conduct involving taxpayer money. Smith and Melson recently filed a qui tam lawsuit against the company for misconduct they witnessed while working for the company overseas in Kabul, Afghanistan. The lawsuit claims that Jorge executives repeatedly violated the company's rules of conduct including: indiscriminately firing weapons and possessing prohibited grenades, and tossing live ammunition into bonfires while intoxicated during parties, thereby causing the bullets to explode and, in one instance, a bullet struck a company employee near his eye. www.employmentlawgroup.net

Afghanistan: Suicide Bomber Kills 12 In Kabul after "anti-Islam" film protest
Continue reading the main story Taliban Conflict Marching forwards Taliban fighters switch sides What lies ahead? Nato's exit strategy Watch Up to 12 people are reported to have been killed in a suicide bomb attack on a minibus carrying foreigners near the Afghan capital, Kabul. Eight South Africans were killed in the attack which took place on a major road leading to the international airport. Afghan insurgent group Hezb-e-Islami has claimed responsibility for the blast, which it says was in response to a recent anti-Islam video. It comes as Nato says it will restrict operations with Afghan forces from now. A South African foreign affairs ministry spokesman told the AFP news agency the eight victims worked for a private aviation company. "We have identified those who have been killed, but we cannot release their names until we have notified their next of kin," Nelson Kgwete, a spokesman for South Africa's Department of International Relations and Co-operation told the BBC. "This is the first time that we've had South Africans killed in such a manner in the region." Mr Kgwete said it was hard to tell whether more South Africans were in the area. He did not comment on whether there were plans to extract them until the situation normalised. He said South Africa had no diplomatic relation with Afghanistan which made it difficult to get all necessary information quickly. South Africa was working through its representatives in Pakistan on the matter, Mr Kgwete said. The BBC's ...

It was a period of mutual suspicion and paranoia that later became known as "The Great Game". Afghanistan was perceived by Victorian Britain, as it's believed to be today, to be an immediate threat to British national security. In this first film, Rory Stewart tells the story of the decision-making that led to the first British invasion of Afghanistan, and the three Anglo-Afghan wars fought in this era. And he tells the story of Afghanistan's unlikely reaction to this period. When an Afghan-elite made a futile attempt to impose western-inspired ideas and modernity on the country.

Discussing Afghanistan with Michael Hastings
In 2010, Michael Hastings wrote a controversial piece for Rolling Stone that potentially ruined the reputation of US army general Stanley McChrystal, then commander of NATO's internal security assistance force in the war in Afghanistan. The article, which detailed McChrystal's disapproval of President Obama, caused McChrystal to resign his position. We got in touch with Hastings and he gave us the opportunity to discuss counter insurgency in Afghanistan, criticisms of President Obama and the ongoing tension between the Pentagon and the White House. Romney does NOT support USA military troops afghanistan nomination gop omission draft dodger
As Afghanistan war drags on, Romney omits war from speech Mitt Romney is still entangled in the mess he created when he failed to reference (let alone thank) the tens of thousands of US soldiers serving in Afghanistan during his speech at the recent Republican convention. His big night in Tampa was mostly overshadowed by Clint Eastwood's improv act, but his Afghanistan oops also contributed to the bad post-convention bounce for the Romney campaign, with Romney trying to explain the oversight in the days afterward. It's been journalists to note that Romney had inexplicably short-changed the troops in Afghanistan. Advertise on MotherJones.com And this story does keep unfolding. Last Friday, on Fox News, Romney muffed an attempt to dismiss the matter. He said, "When you give a speech you don't go through a laundry list, you talk about the things that you think are important and I described in my speech, my commitment to a strong military unlike the president's decision to cut our military. And I didn't use the word troops, I used the word military. I think they refer to the same thing." That remark only won Romney scorn for implying a thank-you to the troops wasn't important enough to make his to-do list for the speech. On Sunday, during a rare appearance on Meet the Press, he tried to brush off the controversy with a laugh and said it is "interesting that people are curious about mentioning words in a speech as opposed to policy. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Afghanistan and the International Crisis Group (ICG) on Monday raised concerns pointing to an escalation of economic, political and humanitarian problems in Afghanistan after 2014. The outgoing ICRC director Reto Stocker said in a press conference in Kabul that with the deteriorating security situation since 2006, ordinary Afghans are suffering not only from the war violence but also from a lack of humanitarian aid, health care and adequate response to natural disasters.
