Goal:

Description:
HIV can cause or aggravate malnutrition through reduced food intake, increased energy needs, or poor nutrient absorption. Consequently, malnutrition can hasten the progression of HIV and worsen its impact by weakening the immune system, increasing susceptibility to opportunistic infections and reducing the effectiveness of treatment. Therefore, USAID merges food and nutrition components with HIV/AIDS care and treatment services. FANTA-III supports scale up and quality improvement of nutrition assessment, education and counseling, as well as the provision of therapeutic and supplementary food products for clinically malnourished people living with HIV/AIDS and orphans and vulnerable children.
FANTA-III continues to strengthen coordination of nutrition and HIV services by working with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health and the Federal HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office to develop resources and training for health care professionals and communities. Integration of nutrition into client flow, health management information systems, and clinical protocols strengthens the broader healthy system by helping to routinely and more comprehensively address malnutrition. FANTA-III works closely with PEPFAR partners to strengthen the design of activities aimed at improving access to food among HIV-affected households and links between clinical and food security services.
Expected Results:
- Integrate nutrition into training curricula liaising with other ministries and implementing partners
- Prepare and translate national integrated refresher training material incorporating nutrition and HIV components for the training of existing health extension workers
- Train health workers on nutrition and HIV
- Revise the national health management information system
