MG James D. TyreMajor General James D. “Don” Tyre is the Assistant Adjutant General for the Florida Army National Guard. He enlisted in the Florida National Guard in 1969, serving 10 years as a non-commissioned officer. He attended the Florida Army National Guard Military Academy and was commissioned as an Engineer officer in 1980.

During his career Major General Tyre served in key assignments including: Director of the Joint Staff, Joint Force Headquarters; Commander, 164th Air Defense Artillery Brigade; Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Florida Army National Guard; Chief, Force Structure, Mobilization and Readiness, Florida Army National Guard; Commander, 2nd Battalion, 265th Air Defense Artillery (AVENGER) Regiment; and, Deputy Operations Officer, 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command — the nation’s first Army National Guard – United States Army, multi-component unit.

He holds a Baccalaureate Degree in Business Administration from Edward Waters College. His military education includes the United States Army War College, Masters of Science Degree, Strategic Studies, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. His military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Florida Cross, and the Florida Distinguished Service Medal.
