Infection Control and Disease Surveillance

The Mission of the Infection Control and Disease Surveillance is to promote a safe and healthy environment by preventing healthcare acquired infections in patients, staff, and visitors. Major responsibilities include surveillance, routine monitoring, risk assessment, continuous quality improvement, special projects, consultation, committee involvement, regulatory compliance, and education.

Epidemiology is the academic field of study that includes methods of measurement and applied sciences. Its major purposes are to understand the cause of disease by knowing its distribution, its determinants in person, place, time, and its natural history. The modern Infection Control Practitioner has expertise in epidemiology, statistics, patient care practices, management and environmental issues.

The Infection Control Officer/Hospital Epidemiologist is a registered nurse who is certified by the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, a voluntary autonomous multidisciplinary board that provides direction for and administers the certification process for professionals in infection control and applied epidemiology.
