179th Airlift Wing

The 179th Airlift Wing is a military airlift organization located at Mansfield Lahm Regional Airport, Ohio. The 179th’s mission is to utilize the C-27 Spartan to provide direct airlift support to the United States Army. The C-27J Spartan was selected by the Department of Defense to fulfill Army and Air Force requirements for a medium-lift, intra-theater airlift aircraft – the Air National Guard became the sole operators in 2009, and provides Direct Airlift Support to Combat Aviation Brigades. The primary mission of the C-27J is to deliver time sensitive/mission critical supplies the “last tactical mile,” as well as to provide for airlift in support of homeland defense operations.

<p>Before that C-130 rolls down the strip, the Air Transportation Specialist makes sure it's packed tight with everything the troops will need to complete missions. From food, water and medical supplies to Humvees and helicopters, you'll be responsible for securely packing cargo so that it can be loaded and transported safely and quickly. You'll even be responsible for checking in passengers and baggage when the cargo is actually military personnel. Once that plane takes off, there's no turning back if something's forgotten, which is why the Air Transportation Specialist ensures absolutely everything is loaded and ready to go.</p><p>Air Transportation Specialists are specially trained in:</p><ul><li>Passenger and cargo movement functions to include transport aircraft types, capabilities, and configuration</li><li>Weight and balance factors</li><li>Airlift transportation directives and documentation</li><li>Cargo restraint techniques; border clearance requirements</li><li>Operation of materials handling and other types of loading equipment or devices, fleet service functions</li><li>Automated data processing equipment and its application in airlift activities</li><li>Passenger service functions, and customer relations principles</li><li>Aerial delivery techniques and equipment use</li></ul> Air Transportation

<p>As a Personnel Specialist, you'll be an integral part of your assigned personnel's career, from their first days in the Air Guard to their retirement. In this role, you'll be working with Airmen across all fields and departments, as well as with their families. You'll help them initiate and maintain their personnel records, advise them on their career development and the variety of job specialties available to them, as well as counsel military personnel and their dependents on a variety of matters that concern them as members of the Air Guard community. <p>The Air National Guard makes constant use of high-tech communication techniques that require expert Spectrum Operations Technicians to ensure nothing interferes with the delivery and reception of all Air Guard electromagnetic broadcasts. The Spectrum Operations Technician analyzes requirements and requests frequencies to support terrestrial, aircraft, and space systems and to coordinate radio, radar, land, and other electromagnetic radiating or receiving requirements.
