I was approved to receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) disability benefits, but I have been told that my back due benefits must be paid in installments. Can I receive the money sooner?
Social Security usually is required to issue large past-due benefits in up to three installments, six months apart. However, you may be able to receive all of the back pay or a larger installment payment.
We can pay all of the back pay at one time to a person who:
· Has a terminal illness and is not expected to live past 12 months; or
· Is not eligible for SSI now and is likely to remain ineligible for 12 months.
We may be able to pay a larger installment payment amount to a person who has certain debts or expenses that are not eligible to be paid by anyone else. We may be able to increase your payment by the amount of current debts related to food, clothing, shelter, medicine or medically necessary services, supplies or equipment, or the purchase of a home.
If you have a situation that meets one of the requirements above, call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday or contact your local office.
