Educational Information

Students

  • Patuxent Bird ID InfoCenter--Site presenting photographs, songs, videos, identification tips, maps, and life history information for North American birds.
  • Patuxent Bird Quiz--This site lets you test your knowledge of North American bird identification, distribution in winter (from the Audubon Christmas Bird Count) and summer (from the North American Breeding Bird Survey), and song. Note that we use the term "song" loosely, here, and that you might have to look pretty hard to see some of the photographed bird species in North America!
  • Patuxent Frog Call Quiz--This site provides a resource for learning breeding calls of frogs and toads in the Eastern United States. To learn what species are in your state and what each sounds like, use the frogcall look-up option.
  • Patuxent Wildlife Research Center Glossary
  • Educational Science Notes--Learn about bald eagles, dde, whooping cranes, earthworms and canvasbacks.
  • USGS Learning Web for Students-- The Learning Web, part of the USGS web site, is dedicated to K-12 education and lifelong learning. Explore things on, in, around, and about the earth such as land, water, plants, animals, and maps.
  • USGS Water Science for Schools--We offer information on many aspects of water, along with pictures, data, maps, and an interactive center where you can give opinions and test your water knowledge.

Teachers

  • Tools for Teachers--This website introduces high school students to biological research methods with an emphasis in ecotoxicology. The Countering Contamination: Data and DDE curriculum introduces high school students to ecotoxicology and, more importantly, guides students through the process by which scientists move from raw data to conclusions about the impacts of contaminants on wild animals. Each lesson stimulates students to first ask questions, and then to determine how to use data to address those questions.
  • Educational Science Notes--Educational handouts about bald eagles, dde, whooping cranes, earthworms and canvasbacks.
  • Fact Sheets--summaries of our work including various research projects, field station information, and partner information.
  • Research/Science Showcases-- online representations of poster presentations.
  • Patuxent Wildlife Research Center Glossary
  • USGS Learning Web for Teachers -- The Learning Web, part of the USGS web site, is dedicated to K-12 education and lifelong learning. Explore things on, in, around, and about the earth such as land, water, plants, animals, and maps.
