  • Biography of Secretary of State John Kerry

    On February 1, 2013, John Forbes Kerry was sworn in as the 68th Secretary of State of the United States, becoming the first sitting Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman to become Secretary in over a century. Secretary Kerry joined the State Department after 28 years in the United States Senate, the last four as Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

  • New USCIS Immigrant Fee

    Effective February 1, 2013, all individuals issued immigrant visas overseas must pay a $165.00 USCIS Immigrant Fee before traveling to the United States. Only prospective adoptive parents whose child(ren) is/are entering the United States under either the Orphan or Hague Process, Iraqi and Afghan special immigrants who were employed by the U.S. government, returning residents, and those issued K visas are exempt from the new fee.

    Theater Workshop takes Learning English to Center Stage

    Consulate General Lahore recently welcomed Dr. Kathleen Mulligan and Dr. David Studwell, Theater Arts Fulbright scholars from the U.S., to conduct a workshop at the Information Resource Center. The workshop instructed 22 English Access and University English Language Teachers from Bahawalpur, Lodhran, Multan, D.G. Khan how to use drama techniques in the classroom. The workshop also taught participants ways to use improvisation and how to actively verbalize activities to reduce the pressure associated with language learning.

    Supporting emerging leaders

    In her address to the closing session of the Atlantic Council's Emerging Leaders of Pakistan (ELP) Program, Consul General Nina Fite expressed support for the initiative. The U.S.- funded program sent 15 young Pakistani community leaders to the U.S. to meet with policymakers, community leaders, diaspora communities, and regional experts. The program introduced participants to the dynamics of the civil society in the U.S. as they traveled to several cities across the U.S. Now back in Pakistan, the Emerging Leaders are using what they experienced in the United States to help build stronger organizations here in Pakistan. During the closing session, the three participants spoke about their specific projects: a women's shelter, an interfaith initiative, and a youth network.

    International Visitor alum shares her views about America

    Aneeta Bokutz, a popular RJ in Lahore and one of the participants of the State Department's International Visitors' Leadership Program, talked candidly about her visit, "Going there made me see that there are a lot of people in America that are open-minded toward Pakistan. They were inquisitive about Pakistani culture, wanted to know how we lived and what music we listened to. It's essential for us to recognize and accept our cultural differences. Only then will we be able to truly move forward."
