The Womack Army Medical Center, Podiatric Medicine and Surgical Residency Program was established November 1998 and currently consists of six (6) residency positions, with two (2) residents in each year of training (PGY 1-3). The program is approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME).  The director of the program and has over ten years of experience in academic medicine.

Dr. William Healey was the residency director during the early years of the program and was instrumental in establishing it as a certified training program through The Council on Podiatric Medical Education and the Army Medical Department. After the establishment of the program at Womack he later expanded it to the current three year model by combining the training with the program at Dwight David Eisenhower Army Medical Center.

With the departure of Dr. Healey in 2007, the current director assumed the role of Residency Director. The program has since evolved into the only residency for Podiatrists in the military and as such has trained not only Army Podiatrists but, also Navy Podiatrists. The training now takes place entirely at Womack Army Medical Center.

The Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Program have administrative and educational support from Womack Army Medical Center, as well as the Office of Graduate Medical Education.  Womack Army Medical Center provides a full scope of podiatric medical and surgical care for the foot and ankle.

Also, the Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Program have affiliation agreements with five surgical centers: Keller Army Medical Community Hospital, Martin Army Community Hospital, Madigan Army Medical Center, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Eisenhower Army Medical Center on-site surgical training.

Upon completion of the three years of surgical training, residents graduate competent in all aspects of the medical and surgical management of foot and ankle pathology.
